First, you must configure the balance wheel in DynaPose to precisely match the balance wheel in the watch.
To do this, you will need to do the following:
Next, wind the watch to the point that the balance swings with approximately 180° of amplitude. Optionally, you can use the "Amplitude Mode" toggle to attempt to poise the balance at full-wind, but ~180° will provide the best results.
Using a timegrapher, measure the rate (in seconds per day) of of the watch in the following eight positions, and enter the values into the appropriate fields in the Rate Measurements panel:
Optionally, if you know the current rate of the watch at full-wind in the horizontal positions (Dial Up / Dial Down), you can enter it in the "Full Wind Horizontal Rate" field.
Once the measurements have been entered, click the "Calculate" button to find the heavy and light spots on the balance wheel.
Optionally, you can check the "Show Logical Center of Gravity Indicator" box to see the center of gravity indicator on the balance wheel. Please note this is a representative indication, and not a precise CoG measurement.
Additionally, the Results panel will display:
Using the light spot, heavy spot, and result recommendations, make adjustments to the balance (adding / removing timing washers, adjusting timing screws, etc.) and perform the measurements again. Enter the measurements from that series of timing tests into the Rate Measurement panel and click "Calculate" again to see how your adjustment affected the poise of the balance wheel.
Repeat this process until the poise of the balance wheel is within the desired range. Patience is helpful here, it can take many iterations of small adjustements to get a well-poised balance.
DynaPoise is a web-based tool to assist in dynamically poising a watch's balance wheel.
Dyanmic poising is the process of adjusting the balance wheel of a watch, based on measurements obtained from the watch while it's assembled and running, to acheive optimal poise of the balance; i.e. the center of gravity of the balance wheel is aligned with the center of the balance staff's rotational axis.
DynaPoise allows you to set up a virtual representation of your watch's balance wheel and input the rate measurements in eight different vertical positions. DynaPose then calculates the current poise of the balance wheel and shows you where on your watch's balance the heavy and light spots are located, allowing you to make the appropraite adjustments to bring the balance into poise.
If you are not familair with the concept of dyanmic poising, I suggest reading Paul Silvia's excellent "Dyanmic Poising How-To" series on the subject. Another invaluable resource is Dewey Clark's "Watch Adjustment".
Dynamic poising should only be performed when the watch has been serviced, the escapement set up correctly, and the watch is otherwise running well.
DynaPoise was developed with antique pocket watches in mind, but can be used with any watch with balance wheel and lever escapement.
